SIA Training Changes 2026: What Security Professionals Need to Know
8:07

If you work in the private security industry, or you're planning to start a career as a Security Guard, Door Supervisor or Close Protection Operative, it's important to understand the latest changes to SIA licence-linked training.

The Security Industry Authority (SIA) has introduced further updates during 2025 and 2026 to ensure licence holders have the knowledge and practical skills needed to protect the public, respond to emerging threats, and work safely in modern security environments.

Why have the requirements changed?

The security industry continues to evolve. Security professionals are expected to respond to a wider range of incidents, support vulnerable people, understand current legislation, and work alongside emergency services when required.

The updated training standards are designed to improve public safety and ensure security operatives have the skills needed for today's operational environment.

The Security Industry Authority (SIA) has introduced further updates during 2025 and 2026

Mandatory refresher training

One of the most significant changes affects existing licence holders.

Since 1 April 2025, Door Supervisors and Security Guards renewing their SIA licence must complete mandatory refresher training before renewal. The refresher includes updated learning on topics such as:

  • Terror threat awareness

  • Searching procedures

  • Protecting vulnerable people

  • Practical searching assessments

  • Physical intervention updates (Door Supervisors only)

From 1 April 2026, the same principle applies to Close Protection licence holders, who must also complete mandatory refresher training before renewing their licence. (GOV.UK)

First Aid remains a key requirement

Before undertaking licence-linked training or refresher training, applicants must hold an appropriate first aid qualification. For Security Guards and Door Supervisors, this is typically an Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) qualification or an accepted equivalent. For Close Protection Operatives, a Level 3 First Aid qualification, such as First Aid at Work (FAW), is required before completing refresher training.

Your training provider is responsible for checking that your first aid qualification is valid before you begin your SIA training. Existing certificates may be accepted if they meet the SIA's requirements and remain valid for the required period. (GOV.UK)

What does this mean for security professionals?

If you're planning to renew your SIA licence, don't leave your training until the last minute. Completing your refresher training and ensuring your first aid qualification is valid can help avoid delays to your licence renewal.

If you're new to the industry, you'll also need to complete the required first aid qualification before starting your licence-linked training for a Security Guard or Door Supervisor licence.
