The Security Industry Authority (SIA) has introduced further updates during 2025 and 2026 to ensure licence holders have the knowledge and practical skills needed to protect the public, respond to emerging threats, and work safely in modern security environments.

One of the most significant changes affects existing licence holders.
Since 1 April 2025, Door Supervisors and Security Guards renewing their SIA licence must complete mandatory refresher training before renewal. The refresher includes updated learning on topics such as:
Terror threat awareness
Searching procedures
Protecting vulnerable people
Practical searching assessments
Physical intervention updates (Door Supervisors only)
From 1 April 2026, the same principle applies to Close Protection licence holders, who must also complete mandatory refresher training before renewing their licence. (GOV.UK)
Before undertaking licence-linked training or refresher training, applicants must hold an appropriate first aid qualification. For Security Guards and Door Supervisors, this is typically an Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) qualification or an accepted equivalent. For Close Protection Operatives, a Level 3 First Aid qualification, such as First Aid at Work (FAW), is required before completing refresher training.
Your training provider is responsible for checking that your first aid qualification is valid before you begin your SIA training. Existing certificates may be accepted if they meet the SIA's requirements and remain valid for the required period. (GOV.UK)
